Silicone is a versatile material that is frequently used as a sealant and a glue. Most commonly found in bathrooms and kitchens, silicone has adhesive qualities that make it well suited to a range of applications including sealing, caulking, levelling and bonding.
Our silicone is the Everbuild brand. We stock various colours and grades, with the choice being dependent upon the application in question. For bathrooms and kitchens we recommend our Forever White and Forever Clear range which contains a high-quality mould shield. For high temperature applications we recommend our Heatmate sealant which is temperature resistant up to 300 degrees Centigrade.
Using Silicon Cartridges
Although it is possible to buy silicone in squeezy tubes, the vast majority of contractors, installers and keen DIY’ers use a skeleton gun. This is a metal or plastic framed gun that holds the cartridge in place and expresses the silicone out of the nozzle when the trigger of the gun is depressed.
Like most adhesives, silicone needs to cure to be effective. The means that the silicone needs to dry properly before its properties are fully operative. Curing time varies depending upon the thickness of the bead and the humidity in the application area.
Silicone sealant is resistant to moisture, weathering and most other chemicals. It retains its elasticity across a broad range of temperatures.
Did you know?
Whilst there are thousands of brands of silicone sold all around the world, the actual number of silicon producers (the guys that fill the cartridges) can be counted on the fingers of one hand!
