Woodruff Keys

A woodruff key is a semi-circular key used to secure components onto shafts that generally operate at high speeds, such as crankshafts.

The key fits into a semi-circular recess that is machined into the shaft, with the protruding section of the key locating into a longitudinal keyway or slot on the mating part. The key is fitted into the semi-circular slot on the shaft and the component being secured is then slid into place once the slot has been lined up. Once secured, the key ensures that the component will spin perfectly on the shaft.

The semi-circular shape of a woodruff key means that it can be easily removed by applying downward pressure or tapping with a small screwdriver.
