Shear Nuts

Shear nuts are essentially a hexagon on top of a cone shaped nut.

Only the cone shaped undersection of the nut is threaded, the hexagonal part is not. When the shear nut is installed, the hex section has been designed to break off at a predetermined torque (when the nut is fully tightened). Once the hex section has sheared away from the conical base it can be removed and discarded, leaving just the tamper resistant cone in permanent position.

Our shear nuts are available in metric sizes only and are either zinc plated or in a stainless steel finish.

Warning – shear nuts are permanent fasteners. Once the hex head has sheared they cannot be removed mechanically. For this reason they are used as an anti-theft device, such as when fixing a park bench in place.
