Cable Ties

Cable ties, also called zip ties, are a simple and ingenious type of plastic fastener available in a wide range of sizes up to 1030mm in length.

Available in either black or natural white nylon (actually an off-white colour), cable ties were initially used in the electrical sector as a fastener for tying wires and cables together. Now they are considered much more of a multi-purpose fastener and are commonly used in many different applications in houses, gardens, garages and on construction sites.

How to use cable ties

Cable ties have closely spaced, moulded teeth which locate on a pawl set within the head of the tie. As the tie is passed through the head, the teeth locate on the pawl in a ratcheting fashion, allowing only a one-way direction of travel. Because of this one-way action, cable ties are a permanent fastener – they cannot be loosened or demounted.

To remove a cable tie permanently it is necessary to cut through the tie with wire snips or sharp scissors.

The edges of a cable tie are smooth and rounded, meaning that they do not damage the insulation of the cable. For the same reason, they are also comfortable to work with.

In addition to the ties themselves, we stock self-adhesive foam bases that are mounted on a surface and act as an anchor for the cable tie as it is passed through the slots in the base.
