How to Put Up a Washing Line Pulley System
A washing line is a great alternative to expensive-to-run clothes dryers, especially during the warm and breezy months of the year. Not only is it a more budget-friendly option to dry your clean clothes, but it will also save you time with your laundry – most of the time, clothes that have been hung out to dry don’t need to be ironed!
If it’s your first time hanging a washing line the old-fashioned way with pulleys, all you have to do is follow these simple steps:
- Decide where you want to hang your washing line. Make sure it’s in an area of your outdoor space that’s not used very much, as on nice days you’ll have lots of clean clothes hanging in the way!
- Mark where you’re going to install the pulleys. One pulley should be where you want to stand when you’re hanging your washing up, just above your head but still within reach. The other should be a fair distance away, around 10-20ft off the ground.
- Drill holes where you have marked in step 2.
- Fix a screw hook into each hole that you drilled in step 3.
- Attach your pulleys to the screw hook.
- The last step is to run a clothesline across the pulleys, forming a long loop around each pulley.
And that’s it! You now have a great and cost-effective alternative to a clothes dryer, right outside your house.
My washing line is sagging – how do I fix it?
If your washing line is made from cotton, it might have the tendency to sag after use. To fix this, we recommend installing a washing line tensioner – you can get these from most online retailers such as Amazon.
A clothesline tensioner will maintain the tension of the line, meaning no more sagging!
