Tek screws are self-drilling screws. They cut their own hole, tap their own thread and fix in one pass, so there's no pilot hole to drill first. Tek began as a brand name and became the word many trade professionals still use today when referring to self drillers.
Most of our tek screws are used for two types of jobs: fixing profile sheet and cladding to steel purlins, and metal-to-metal work in framing, ducting and bracketry. What decides which one you need is the thickness of the steel you're drilling into. Get that wrong and the screw jams before it seats.
No. The point is cut for steel and blunts straight away in masonry. For concrete, brick or block you want concrete screws, which have a hardened thread made to cut into a pre-drilled hole.
Not a standard one. Metal to wood screws fix thin sheet steel, up to 0.8mm, down onto timber using a slash point, and they work in timber on its own too. Fixing timber onto steel takes a wood to metal screw. Please note that they will not work if the materials are the other way round, i.e. fixing metal to wood.
