Hollow Wall Anchors

Hollow wall anchors are an effective fixing for applications when fixing to hollow and plasterboard walls.

Hollow wall anchors differ from spring toggles in that they grip the wall tightly from both sides. Once fully screwed into position the screw can then be removed, leaving the female socket part of the anchor firmly in place in the wall.

How to install hollow wall anchors

There are two ways to use a hollow wall anchor – either manually or with a setting tool.

To install a hollow wall anchor manually, drill a large enough hole in the wall to accommodate the anchor. Do not drill the hole any wider than it needs to be or the efficiency of the claws on the front of the fitting will be compromised.

Attach the screw through the item that is being fixed to ensure that there is a turning stop. Push the whole assembly through the hole and tighten the screw. The tightening action forces the arms of the anchor outwards, pulling them firmly into the back of the wall. At the same time, the pointed lugs on the front side of the wall are biting into the surface of the plasterboard.

The screw can now be removed if required as unlike spring toggles the anchor will stay in position.
